SLEEP - The process of autophagy (a fancy word for our body to clean out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells) happens while we're sleeping. Why? Because that's when we're fasting.
Imagine this. You come home from work late. You're hungry, but have to take care of a few things before you can finally get to your food. You're really hungry and tired at this point so you order a pizza. By the time you finally get the pizza it's now pretty late and you jump in the couch with some Netflix and go through the whole pizza before you go straight to bed. Sounds familiar? Well... By doing this you won't have any autophagy.
Remember autophagy is the process of cleaning our damaged cells in order to regenerate newer and healthier ones. By eating late it's like your body's way of not taking the trash out so the cells begin to accumulate more and more debris. Correct, we don't like that!
In addition to recharging the energy stores in the brain, sleep also serves to excrete toxins and cellular waste that have built up during the day.
Think about it like this:
sleep activates a sort of ‘toxin’ pump in the brain to flush out these toxins and cellular waste products. Dang! Who knew?! So make sure you are getting in those ZZZ’s and pump out those toxins while avoiding food right before bed! 💤
